| Hagen's
municipal theatre, built according to plans by the Darmstadt architect
Ernst Vetterlein, was completed in 1911. For the classical façade, with
vertical pilasters separating the entrance doorways beneath a triangular
gable, the Berlin sculptress Milly Steger created four larger than
life-size, pillar-like static female nudes.
Devoid of attribute, symbolical or allegorical meaning, their column-like
verticality refers simply to the figures themselves and the building.
Osthaus, who had brought the young sculptress to Hagen, successfully
defended the nude figures against massive protest from the people of
Hagen.
